A Mineral Body Sunscreen That Performs Like Skincare
When we launched Utu, two sunscreen active ingredients were recognized by the FDA as GRASE — Generally Recognized As Safe and Effective.
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
For us, that distinction mattered more than most people realize.
What GRASE Actually Means
The FDA's GRASE designation isn't a marketing term. It's a regulatory standard — one that requires extensive scientific and safety data demonstrating that an ingredient is safe and effective for long-term use across diverse populations.
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide currently meet that standard.
Several other UV filters widely used in international sunscreen formulations remain under ongoing FDA review. That doesn't mean they're unsafe — it means the data required to meet the GRASE threshold is still being collected, submitted, and evaluated.
At Utu, we made our formulation decisions against that backdrop. Not out of fear, and not because of social media trends. But because we were building Outdoor Skincare® designed to be worn daily, reapplied regularly, and used through every kind of environmental condition — sun, salt, sweat, altitude, cold, heat.
When something becomes part of a daily ritual, the standard for confidence in its long-term safety should be high.
Why Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, Specifically
Within the GRASE category, we chose non-nano zinc oxide as the active in every Utu SPF formula. The reasons are both scientific and practical.
Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB Protection Zinc oxide provides true broad spectrum coverage — protecting across the full range of ultraviolet wavelengths, including the long-wave UVA rays most associated with skin aging and cumulative damage.
A Well-Established Safety Profile Zinc oxide has decades of use in skincare, wound care, and sun protection. Non-nano particle size means the zinc remains on the surface of the skin rather than being absorbed — an important distinction for people using SPF as part of a consistent daily routine.
Daily Wearability We formulated around zinc oxide because it needed to perform not just on the mountain or at the beach, but every day — on a commute, during a run, at a desk near a window. That required textures light enough to wear without thinking about it.
Sensitivity Compatibility Zinc oxide is inherently gentle — well-tolerated by sensitive skin, reactive skin, and skin regularly exposed to environmental stress. For Outdoor Skincare® worn through movement, sweat, and exposure, that compatibility matters.
Environmental Alignment Non-nano zinc oxide is reef-compatible and aligned with our broader commitment to formulating with the ocean and environment in mind.
SPF Is Skincare
For us, SPF was never simply about UV blocking.
It's about building products people actually want to use every day — formulas that feel good, perform reliably, and support long-term skin health rather than just surface-level protection.
That philosophy shapes every formula in the Utu lineup. Whether you're in the mountains, near the ocean, navigating city pollution, or anywhere life outdoors happens — your daily SPF should work with your skin, not against it.
